"We'll Call it Recognizable"

Kristen: I am looking toward furthering my education in order to become an Art Therapist. Psychology is one of my greatest interests, and Fine Art, particularly drawing and painting, has always been an outlet for my passion. Personally, I was diagnosed with a form of Muscular Dystrophy (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) when I was about 3 years of age. At 13 it was necessary for me to undergo life-saving surgery, and my entire spine was permanently fused. My interest in art originally developed as an outlet for dealing with the emotional scars that came with a permanent, degenerative diagnosis. It grew into a complete way of expressing the chronic pain I feel physically, mentally, and emotionally on a daily basis. I feel that my diagnosis is both a blessing and a curse, because I believe everything must sum to a whole. Through my lens-on-life, I can see a genuine purpose for art making and the individual; I can see it as therapeutic and expressive, and personally realize the health benefits of such a creative outlet. My artwork expresses these views.
